Tree okra, also known as Thavasi Vendhai or perennial okra, is a tall, long-living variety that grows like a small shrub and yields continuously for several months. This hardy variety is ideal for backyard gardens, farm borders, and large grow bags. It is well-suited for most Indian climates and thrives in warm, sunny weather.
Sow the seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil. Choose a spot with full sunlight. Soak the seeds in water for 8 to 10 hours before sowing to improve germination. Sow the seeds one inch deep and keep 2 to 3 feet spacing between plants, as they grow into tall and bushy structures. Germination typically occurs in 6 to 10 days.
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture during early growth stages. Once established, the plant becomes drought-tolerant and needs only minimal watering. Apply compost or organic manure every 20 to 25 days. Flowering begins in 50 to 60 days, and harvesting of pods can start from 70 to 80 days after sowing. Pods should be harvested when young and tender for best texture and taste.
Tree okra can produce continuously for several months, making it a long-term and low-maintenance crop for home gardens across India
