Green okra, also known as ladies finger or bhindi, is a fast-growing and highly productive vegetable suitable for most regions in India. It grows best in warm climates and can be sown during summer and early monsoon. Choose a location with full sunlight and well-drained, fertile soil.
Sow the seeds directly into the soil or grow bags. Before sowing, soak the seeds in water for 8 to 10 hours to improve germination. Sow them about one inch deep with a spacing of 12 to 15 inches between plants. Keep the soil moist during the germination phase, which typically takes 5 to 7 days.
Okra plants require regular watering, especially during flowering and fruiting stages. Apply compost or organic manure every 15 to 20 days. The plants start flowering in 40 to 45 days, and harvesting can begin from the 50th day onwards. Harvest the pods when they are tender, usually 3 to 5 inches in length, for the best taste and texture.
Okra grows well in pots, raised beds, and open soil. With proper care, you can enjoy multiple harvests over several weeks
