Description

White bitter gourd, also known as white karela or pavakkai, is a rare and attractive variety with all the benefits of traditional green bitter gourd. It is slightly milder in bitterness and rich in iron, fiber, and antioxidants. This climbing vegetable grows well in warm and humid climates, making it suitable for most regions across India during summer and monsoon seasons.

Sow the seeds directly in well-drained, fertile soil with full sunlight. Soak the seeds in water overnight to speed up germination. Sow them about one inch deep with a spacing of 12 to 15 inches between plants. Use a strong trellis or vertical support to allow the vines to climb freely. Germination usually occurs within 7 to 10 days.

Water the plants regularly, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. Apply compost or organic manure every 15 to 20 days. Flowering begins in 35 to 45 days, and fruits can be harvested from 55 to 70 days after sowing. Harvest when the fruits are firm, white, and tender for best taste and nutrition.

This variety is ideal for terrace gardens, open fields, balconies with vertical support, and kitchen gardens. It adapts well to different Indian climates with proper care.
